Every Time I Upload a Gif to Tumblr Its Frozen
Gif tutorial: Staying below the 3MB limit
E'er make a gif that is over 3MB and Tumblr won't accept it? You want to brand it smaller without affecting the overall quality? In this tutorial I go over a few methods that will let you to subtract the file size of your gif without irresolute its advent too much!
Note that not every single trick shown will work on every unmarried gif. Also note that you lot can combine several tricks if you need to.
Making a gif darker
This is a single frame of a gif that is 3.5MB (Adaptive, pattern, 256 colours). The gif itself is too big for me to upload onto Tumblr. I've coloured the gif and I'm happy with what it looks. I could become and reduce the 256 colours to 128 or even lower to become it downwardly to 3MB, just that's not what nosotros're going to do. We want to preserve the total 256 colour quality.
On summit of all your layers, create a levels aligning layer. What we're going to practise is make the gif just slightly darker past taking the shadows arrow and moving it only a petty fleck to the right. The shadows pointer is the pointer about to the left in the slider with 3 arrows.
When I've done this the gif won't expect drastically different, just a little scrap darker.

^ After:
By making this small-scale adjustment, I've reduced the gif from iii.5MB to 2.9MB without doing annihilation to the quality of the gif.
Freezing parts of the scene
Freezing parts of your scene means that you lot're literally going to freeze a part of your gif in place.
(Anime: New Game!)
This gif is currently 2.1MB large, which of class is small enough for Tumblr, but for the sake of the tutorial we're going to pretend that information technology isn't.
Certain parts of the scene, don't move or alter. After having washed all the editing I wanted to become washed (colours, sharpening, blurring then on) I'k going to freeze certain parts of the scene. I do this when my gif is on the video timeline.
I'm going to freeze the shrub in the second part of the gif.
Firstly I need to see where on the timeline the van is completely off screen.
One time I've located that point I'thousand going to select the expanse that I desire to freeze. After selecting I printing Command/Ctrl + Shift + C. This will re-create everything that is shown inside my selection no matter what layer I am on. Once it'due south copied, I paste it.
Every bit you can see, it'southward longer than my bodily gif now. Merely slide it back to match the end of the gif.
Tadah, you've frozen a part of your gif. It'southward actually that directly frontwards, just I cut out 0.2MB.
Let's say I need to get in ever smaller. I can freeze as much as I like equally long as there are parts of the scene that don't move. (I went overboard here).
I highlighted the areas that are frozen. As yous can encounter a lot of the scene doesn't actually move (aside from some tiny flower petals that for the sake of this tutorial we are pretending do not exist).
After having frozen all these areas in the gif, I slimmed it down from 2.1MB to 1.6MB.
Removing the panning in the scene
Find an elaborate tutorial tutorial on this topic hither.
Panning is when the photographic camera in your scene moves from 1 side to another. By removing the pan, you are able to cutting out duplicate frames that you wouldn't have been able to cut out earlier (more information on cutting out duplicates later in the tutorial!) and on peak of that there is less movement that would add to your gif'south file size. Not to mention that y'all can now freeze parts of the scene also.
Our aim is to remove the camera's movement from the scene, equally you can see to a higher place.
Altering your sharpen settings
I like to define sharpening as me adding a small amount of detail to my gif. With that said, it should exist easier to understand that sharpening adds onto my filesize, this while sometimes sharpening doesn't fifty-fifty actually make that much of a difference in the end result.
Anime: Hyouka
The outset gif is sharpened, the 2d gif isn't. As you can see, at that place'south hardly any difference if at all. However, the first gif is bigger in filesize than the 2d. I chose to remove the sharpen considering it doesn't make a visual departure anyway.
While sometimes this works, at other times you may want to continue your gif sharpened. Lowering the amount of sharpen can reduce the file size besides.
Blurring
Anime: Oshiete! Galko-chan
Blurring very basically put is the contrary of sharpening. If reducing sharpen lowers file size, so will information technology's opposite, blurring.
Blurring is something yous take to do in low amounts for the right result. Too much and your gif will brand people question whether or not they demand spectacles.
^ Without blur
^ With mistiness
Neither the file size or the visual are drastically different. What I chose to do is apply surface blur (which I exercise in all gifs) at a radius of 3 and a threshold of iv likewise as a Gaussian blur at 0.2px. Never go college than these numbers or you'll lose also much particular.
Note that this volition not e'er await good.
Removing indistinguishable frames
Anime: Nichijou
This is a frame from a gif that I oasis't edited withal. Right now the gif is 3.5MB (Adaptive, pattern, 256 colours) with 120 frames. I haven't converted to a video timeline because I want to take a closer look at the frames.
I know that some of these frames are duplicates of the frames that came before them. Technically I don't demand these frames for the blitheness to be smooth. And so I can remove them.
Looking at the frames I can see that 1 and 2 are the same, 3 and 4, and 5, half-dozen and seven. Meaning that afterwards deleting the duplicates, I volition accept 3 frames instead of vii. To prevent the timing of the gif from being unlike, I remove a frame and add together the delay into the previous frame.
This can exist a little disruptive then let me explicate that once more. The kickoff two frames were the same. Both of them had a 0.04 second delay. Together that adds up to 0.08. Meaning that if I remove one, I cut the delay in one-half. If I add the filibuster I removed into the frame that stays, it stays the aforementioned. The same for frame 5, 6 and vii. Together they fabricated 0.12.
At present that I've removed all the indistinguishable frames, I've managed to cutting my gif to 2.8MB with a full of 64 frames. This means I've cut down nearly half of the frames without actually affecting the animation'south smoothness.
Cropping your gif
Uncropped
Anime: Katanagatari
Cropped
Cropping is to cutting off from the width or acme of your gif. It's pretty straightforward. I don't recommend cut into your width nor do I recommend cutting a lot off from your elevation. Cropping isn't meant to cut off massive chunks from your filesize or your gif for that thing.
I use this equally a terminal resort blazon of affair. When I have tried everything I possibly could and the file is at 3.05MB, I similar to cut off a little bit from the top and/or lesser to cut off that 0.05MB.
What I like to do is make a selection with the rectangular marquee tool (Thou) and so press ingather (C), followed past enter to confirm the crop.
Swapping colours / removing grain
This is a segment I've copied from another one of my tutorials (on making clean gifs). Removing grain can lower your filesize tremendously. This is because grain generally moves when your gif plays. By removing the grain, you lot remove movement, which results in a lower filesize.
We're going to be looking at a Ponyo gif. Ponyo is relatively easy to get grainless for the nearly part. Below you lot can run across it saved on improvidence, 100 dither and with an adaptive palette. At first glance it looks pretty clean.
Just when zoomed in, you tin can see the little speckles of grain showing up quite clearly. We want to remove them.
Like I've mentioned earlier, what you can exercise is arrange the colouring to the point that it is clean. Which is something I do recommend you do considering it's much simpler than the method I'm about to explain. Firstly however, we're just going to lower the dither to 99%. The colouring is flat and nosotros won't encounter any big problems if we lower the dither past 1%.
On 99% dither we've taken intendance of pretty much all of the grain. Yous can see that there's still a little something though, right on the white belly. Truth exist told, most people wouldn't even notice that. But we're going to delve into the way we tin can fix this.
In save for spider web, brand sure yous accept 2-up view or 4-upwardly view selected. What we demand is for the original prototype to be shown correct next to the ane nosotros're saving.
On the left of the original image in save for spider web, you tin find the eyedropper tool.
.
With the eyedropper tool y'all tin can sample colours any of the previews in relieve for web. Within your about-to-be saved gif, y'all tin now pin point colours in the areas that are grainy and remove them.
Let'south go dorsum a fiddling. Select the eyedropper tool and select a grainy area in the version of the gif you lot are near to save. You will at present have that colour selected in your colour table. What you tin do now, is press the trash tin can icon and delete that color. This ways that you now have 255 colours in your gif.
Sometimes this will articulate out the grain in that area, only today we're not that lucky. We still have a bit of grain left. The main reason we sampled and removed a color is to make space for a new colour.
Again, select the eyedropper tool. At present instead of in your about-to-exist saved gif, sample a color in the area that is appearing grainy from the make clean original. One time you take done that, select your about-to-be-saved gif and click the new colour icon.
Below you can see the icon I'm talking about. What you just did is sample a colour and add that colour into the palette of the gif you're well-nigh to save.
We're near there.
It'southward very hard to run into, but there is some blotching in the hair.
I used the method I only explained and now the area is make clean.
The problem is, because the pilus is and then like in colour as the rest of the body, this created a blotched surface area in some other part of the gif.
You lot might see a drop in your filesize past now, you might non. It'southward good to note that this tin can be very time consuming. Information technology's too easier to practice when you're saving merely a unmarried frame rather than all frames at one time.
That's all!
